    MEC Victoria Race THREE 2018

In front of the Hatley Castle on Royal Roads University Campus after I completed 10K with MEC Victoria Race THREE.

This morning was my third 10K race and first time running without kids/running stroller. It turns out I can run nine minutes quicker without all the distractions from my kids. My last 10K race, 2018 Blueshore Financial Mothers Day Run took 1:12:37, probably because I stopped every couple kilometers to check on my kids. My goal for this run was +/-1:05:00 and I surprised myself when I completed the run in 1:03:44 (chipped time).

Okay guys, you should probably stop reading here because you might not want to hear what I have to say next. I totally leaked on the run. That’s right, I had a nice wet stain on my navy blue shorts and thank goodness I was wearing a longer shirt. But you know what? I don’t care, I’m going to own it because I’m a mother who gave birth to two children in less than two and a half years. So, yeah, I’m totally going to leak because things are not what they use to be down there and I’m terrible for doing my Kegels. Others ran past me with sweaty backs and soaked shorts from swass (sweaty ass) which made me feel better. Absolutely nothing wrong with that right?!

The 10K race route from my Garmin Vívoactive 3 Smartwatch.

MEC Victoria Race THREE 2018 took place at Royal Roads in Colwood, BC (Greater Victoria). The area is known for the Hatley Castle and the Royal Roads University. If you want to read more about the Hatley Castle, click here. Movies such as Deadpool, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men 2 and many more have been filmed at the castle so it’s kind of a big deal. The race started along the lagoon which was such a nice spot other than how chilly it was. I didn’t want to take off my long-sleeved shirt and many other runners looked cold. I sucked it up and left my long-sleeved shirt in the car and ran in shorts and a tank. It didn’t take long for my body to warm up and the first half of the the run was sheltered from the breeze. Each kilometer was marked out along the way. The route was a mix of trail and road with 116m elevation gain (according to my Gamin Vívoactive 3 Smartwatch). There were aid stations every 2.5-3.0K through the race providing water and electrolytes.

There was plenty of parking when I arrived at 8:15AM (10K race started at 9:00AM) with $1.00/hour parking (except we were all lucky and received free parking because the machines weren’t working). The volunteers for the race were awesome and so were the pre-race and post-race snack and drinks provided by sponsors.

I paid $15 for the race which included a bib and 10% off all regular-priced MEC purchases (excludes clearance, markdown and Blundstone items) during in-store bib pick-up times. All you needed to do was show the cashier your bib to receive the discount. I was really impressed with the MEC race and I would highly recommend trying it out if you haven’t already. It was my first race with MEC and I plan on registering for more in the future!

Race Day Timing results from my last two races. Note: the 2018 Blueshore Financial Mothers Day Run – 10K was with a running stroller.

    2018 Global Running Day!

    One of my running buddies

Happy Global Running Day! Today is a worldwide celebration encouraging everyone to get out and move. Everyone has a different reason for running: de-stress, increase energy, weight loss, postpartum depression, staying fit, etc. Whatever the reason may be, it’s all about the individual and how running makes them feel. Did you know you can join a virtual race to celebrate Global Running Day between June 4 and June 10 at NYRR Virtual Global Running Day 1M? It’s free to sign up and to participate, you need a Strava account (which is also free).

Running has been an on and off activity for me. When I’m finally out and running, I love it and ask myself “why don’t I do this more often?” Finding time is one thing but if you think about it, we can all take 30 minutes to do something out of a 24-hour day. I am the queen of excuses when it comes to physical fitness for myself. However, reality had finally sunk in and I am no longer able to squeeze into my loose baggy shirts, I am no longer playing ice hockey 2-3 times a week and I am no longer a server at a restaurant which requires a ton of running around. Instead, I am 10 months postpartum with two children, married to a surgical resident who is always working, I eat when I remember to which means shoving junk food in my mouth when the kids are napping or distracted for a few minutes, and I can barely get myself and the kids dressed by 10:00AM. I am mentally and physically exhausted by the time the kids are in bed and the last thing I want to do is leave my partner who I haven’t seen all day to go out for a run. Plus, we all know the cleaning I shoved off to the side from earlier in the day for “later” is finally here and it isn’t going to clean itself. My life just over three years ago didn’t require two small children and a dog all under three years of age to depend on me.

My kids are finally napping in the stroller

Thanks to my partner who was willing to support me through my stroller purchases (even though he thinks I’m crazy), I went out and purchased a multi-sport stroller, mainly used for running with the kids and dog during the day. I have my kids with me all the time so the stroller with my kids and dog are my running buddies who all deserve some recognition on Global Running Day. Sometimes my toddler is screaming and crying because she doesn’t want to be sitting strapped in a stroller and other times she is napping away next to my 10-month-old who is also napping (if I’m lucky). I don’t run all the time but I’m trying to get out more often with summer around the corner. We all start somewhere right? It has helped me with my mental health and energy levels which is why I plan to continue down this path. Also, my partner is working in Victoria, BC for the month of June so it’s a bit hard to stay indoors with the beautiful ocean view.

I would love to hear what motivates you to go out and run (walk or get out in general). If you don’t get outside, what’s stopping you?

All good things usually come to an end

What a bittersweet feeling. I’ve been volunteering with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC), formerly known as Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (APEGBC) since October 2015 and I decided earlier this year that this would be my last year with them. For the last three years, I organized the EIT/GIT Career Seminar: How to Obtain Your P.Eng or P.Geo Designation, also known as Path to Professional Licensure with the EGBC Vancouver Branch. The event I’ve been organizing for months was this evening and it was a success. With a maximum of 100 registrants, we had 96 people register for the event with a handful more registrants at the door.

Event planning is no easy task. Anyone who has planned a large event would hopefully say the same and agree it takes a lot of patience and communication. It’s an amazing feeling to see it all come together in one evening. I would love to continue to volunteer for the branch but I am ready to take a step back from my role as an event coordinator. Last year 2016-2017, I took on the role of secretary which included meeting minutes, communicated with all volunteers interested in the branch, and sent out meeting invitations and reminders. It doesn’t sound like much but I spent a good 15 hours minimum each month on those tasks. Although I enjoyed the role very much, it took physical commitment I was struggling to achieve with no childcare and a husband who works 80-100 hours a week. Now with two children, it makes it a little more challenging. I don’t want to say my children are the reason why I have decided to take a step back from volunteering. They definitely are not the reason and throughout my volunteer experience, I’ve either been pregnant or nursing. So it can be done! I want to shift focus in other areas of my life so here I am.

Thank you to all volunteers who have taken time out of their busy schedules and personal lives to volunteer at the EGBC Vancouver Branch. Those who volunteered at the events I’ve organized, been a speaker and/or helped me out at meetings or any other way— THANK YOU SO MUCH. Most of you reading this know who you are and made my volunteer experience a memorable one.

    Solo parenting tips 101

With my partner off in London, UK for 5 days, I came up with a few tips and things to remember for solo parenting that I wanted to share:

    • have zero expectations
    • repeat to yourself “you can do it!”
    • remember “a shower is a need, not a want” (like I said, these are MY tips…)
    • imagine the light at the end of the tunnel. In particular, bedtime when the kids are sleeping and remember it’s all about you when they’re finally in bed
    • ask for help and/or accept help if you have family and friends

Night five and last night solo parenting

It’s night five of solo parenting and I am so thrilled to have my partner back home tomorrow. I can’t say it was an easy five nights but taking it one night at a time helped. Here’s a recap of what we did while my husband left the country:

    Day 1 (first evening alone):

    • Drove to pick up an IKEA Kallax (4 square) unit from someone off craigslist (with screaming kids in the car for a 7 minute drive)

    Day 2:

    • Attended a NEXUS appointment for our youngest, Sloane who is the only member of the family who doesn’t have her card
    • Bought a mini crib (which I am so excited about!)
    • Spent the evening setting up the crib in the main room

    Day 3:

    • Parent participation preschool with Blake (and Sloane)
    • During nap time, I managed to move our IKEA Kallax unit (8 square) out of our bedroom and set up a mini crib. If you have me on instagram (@twodegreeslater), you would’ve seen the mini crib fail photo I posted. If you didn’t see it, here it is:

Let me take a step back and talk about Sloane. Some of you must be wondering where she was during nap time if she normally sleeps in our bedroom. While she was nursing, I realized I had collapsed her pack n play (where she normally sleeps). While I had her attached to my boob, I managed to throw a bunch of blankets and towels into the tub with the mattress for the new crib into the bathtub to set up a somewhat safe and quiet environment for her to sleep in. She seemed quite content if you ask me.

Sloane’s set up after I realized I took her bed apart without a backup
    • Who knew bathtubs were multifunctional? Let’s go back to the mini crib fail. Those edges on the crib that curved out screwed me and I had to take the crib apart to get it through the door. Yes, that’s right, the night before I assembled it. Then the next day I couldn’t shove it through the door frame so I had to dissemble it only to assemble it again in the bedroom. The important part is it was all set up before both kids were awake so I think that’s a mom win there.
    • Two words: Sleep training. I’m not really sure why this was such a good idea at the time but I decided since the crib was set up in the bedroom for Sloane, I might as well give sleep training an attempt. Let me say that Sloane is a champ and I want to give it a couple weeks before I comment on any of it.

    Day 4:

    • Sold a few items thanks to Facebook Marketplace (mama’s gotta make some money, am I right!?)

    Day 5:

    • Gymnastics
    • Grocery shopped (on a Saturday…)
    • Attended a birthday party which we made it to after a nap! Sweet success!

I didn’t do a lot of crazy things these five days but I definitely got a lot accomplished with tidying up our home and selling extra items we don’t need around the home.

Here are my tips for solo parenting:

    • have zero expectations
    • repeat to yourself “you can do it!”
    • remember “a shower is a need, not a want” (like I said, these are MY tips…)
    • imagine the light at the end of the tunnel. In particular, night time when the kids are sleeping and remember it’s all about you when they’re finally in bed
    • ask for help and/or accept help if you have family and friends

Miles, I’m ready for you to come home!

Today was my first out of five days solo parenting and here’s how it went…

Solo parenting isn’t new to me and I do it quite often considering I’m married. My husband works roughly 100 hours a week. He’s gone 12-14 hours during the weekday and if he’s not off on the weekends, he’s either at work or on call. Some days he won’t be home until after the kids are in bed. Even then, it’s not that bad because I usually know he’ll be home at some point.

Not this time. He’s gone for five days. 120 hours. 7200 minutes. 432,000 seconds… okay, you’re right. It’s not that bad at all. I guess I forgot to mention that the tail end of our Easter weekend involved gastroenteritis. Being childless and sick sucks but you get to sleep all you want. Being a parent and sick really sucks because you can’t sleep when you want because there are little people who need you to watch them every minute. You need to count down to nap time and oh wait, with two kids, one will finally be napping and the other one is still awake so you can’t take a snooze.

Let me recap what happened after my husband left this afternoon. Blake was inconsolable after her nap and nothing in the world would make it better— that is until the word “ducks” slipped out of my mouth. Have you seen Love Child love ducks? They’re like crack cocaine for toddlers. I swear every toddler loves them and if you have them at an outing, every toddler will find their way to you. Well, after some bribery, I managed to get Blake, Sloane and Loki out of the home to pick up a piece of IKEA furniture I found on craigslist while the kids were both napping. Yup, you read that right, they were both napping at the same time. Both kids were unhappy with the seven minute drive over to the pick up place and the dog was whining the entire drive because he thought we were going to the dog park.

Dinner was unsuccessful, ducks was the only thing Blake wanted to eat and Sloane wasn’t really interested in anything I offered her. One of my amazing friends, Sophie who lives a couple doors down was picking up pizza for her family and offered to grab us some cheese sticks. Of course we accepted and of course my crazy toddler took a bite and turned it down because she was full from all her ducks. Even though dinner was unsuccessful, I managed to get Blake down for bed (even if it was 20 minutes later than normal) so that’s a win for me! Both kids are sleeping now and I hope it stays that way until the morning. Even though my 8-month-old has not slept through a single night yet, I can keep dreaming about it. Well, one night down, four nights to go.

To the full-time single mom and dads, kudos to all of you because you do this every single day.

    Flight preparation

The dollar store goodies all under $20

We are flying to Palm Springs on Saturday and this will be the first time Blake will have her own seat now that she’s over 2 years old. Fun fact: when you book flights with WestJet, you can reserve your seats for FREE when you are traveling with children. Score! I’m trying to find information on free seat reservation with children and I am unable to find it. We were told it was free over the phone when we booked through WestJet MasterCard to use our points. The flight from Vancouver, BC to Palm Springs, CA is 2 hours and 51 minutes which seems short— if your child is quietly sleeping or sitting for the entire flight. The last time we flew with WestJet, they didn’t have screens available for inflight entertainment; I believe it is only available for longer flights. That means we need our own smart device and/or entertainment for the flight. I went to Your Dollar Store With More down the road and scored some goodies all for under $20. I bought:

    • 6 – Play Pack Grab & Go (one not in photo) | $1 each
    • 2 – Grab and Go | $4 each
    • 2 – Stickerland books with 6 pages in each book | $1.25 each
    • 1 – Sticker pack with 8 sheets | $1.25

I don’t plan on bringing all the Play Packs since I’m saving some for future outings like going out to restaurants or using them as back up in the diaper bag. Here’s what I plan on bringing:

    • 2 – Grab and Go
    • 2 – Play Pack Grab & Go
    • 3 pages of stickers
What we are bringing on the flight

In addition to sticker fun, we’ll be packing books and snacks with it all. I’ll update everyone on how successful or unsuccessful the stickers were after Saturday. Stickers, snacks, smart device, books, 2 parents, 1 toddler and a baby should be fine right?

    Family Day in BC!

It’s Family Day in BC! Growing up, my family and I were usually working so we never really had a day off all together for holidays like Family Day. Now with children, I want to make the most out of our holidays. It was so nice to have my husband off work this weekend. He has a friend working in the city for a month so he joined us for Family Day. For anyone interested in joining or renewing a membership with the Vancouver Aquarium, memberships are 25% off between February 10-12, 2018. I wish I knew memberships went on sale when we bought ours last year! We purchased a two-year membership and ours didn’t expire until December 2018. However, we didn’t completely miss out— it turns out we were able to renew our membership super early with the 25% off! We extended our membership by another 2 years which means our membership doesn’t expire until February 2021. Plus, a free guest pass each year (with family and adult memberships) and a bunch of other benefits. You can’t really go wrong as long as you go a couple times each year. Shockingly, when we went to the Aquarium on the weekend, it wasn’t as crazy as we were expecting. On the other hand, it may be because we arrived during the morning.

What I CAN say is going to Grouse Mountain on Family Day 45 minutes after it opens is a bad idea. Sometimes leaving early doesn’t quite happen (I think kids, a dog and two sleepy adults might have something to do with it). When we pulled up to the parking lot, it was PACKED! The only available parking spots were down the hill and it would’ve been a 10-15 minute walk up the hill. Plus my husband didn’t have his annual pass for the mountain yet so it would be another long wait in the admission line, which we saw out the door when we were trying to find a parking spot. We ended up going out for breakfast at White Spot (of course after I ate a breakfast sandwich meal from Timmy’s thinking I wouldn’t eat for hours). Here’s a few things I learned this weekend:

    * Vancouver Aquarium memberships go on sale and since our renewal, we are good until we move away
    * don’t go to Grouse Mountain on Family Day (unless you like crowds)
    * if Grouse Mountain is on the agenda on a holiday, arrive at least 30 minutes early to be safe
    * White Spot restaurant is very kid friendly

On a day like today, I’ll take living in Vancouver over Calgary

I was born and raised in Calgary, AB and there are days where I really miss home. Mainly because of the mountains, our family, friends and the affordability of owning a large home. A home in Vancouver would start at a million dollars and that would be for a crack shack. If you want to know what I mean by “crack shack”, here’s a little game called Crack Shack or Mansion. You’ll get a better idea after you play it.

If you’re unfamiliar with Calgary weather, there’s sun, chinooks, a lot of snow and it gets cold! I love the snow and I don’t mind the cold (less bugs!) but this week made me realize that I’m not ready to move back any time soon (or at all). Calgary was under a winter storm warning forecasting 25cm to 35cm of snow. As I’m scrolling through my Facebook News Feed, everyone in Calgary is posting photos of all the snow Calgary is getting (great for the mountains). In the north, the LRT C-Train was down and passengers would have to get off at the train station and bus downtown to work. Many of my friends were hibernating inside to avoid the snowy roads and I’m over here in 10°C weather going for a walk. Don’t worry Calgary, we definitely get our grey skies and pouring rain over here. If we’re lucky, we’ll get a little piece of sunlight. Today, I’ll enjoy myself in the warm and dry (believe it or not) weather.

    Blake is TWO!

It has been two lovely years with my daughter and we look forward to many more. It is amazing how quickly time goes by when we’re constantly busy. My mother-in-law (MIL) flew in from Calgary this weekend to join us for Blake’s birthday. Since Blake’s birthday is on a Monday, we decided to dedicate the weekend to birthday festivities. I won’t bore you with the details but here’s a summary of what we did:

    * went out for breakfast (twice!) and lunch
    * splash in some muddy puddles at Spanish Banks and throw the ball for our dog, Loki
    * gymnastics at TumbleTown
    * swim lessons at Aquaventures
    * baked Blake’s cake
    * Blake and Sloane participated in a UBC study at the UBC Centre for Infant Cognition

We don’t go out to eat very often and those with young children probably understand (or those who have seen children meltdown in public). Knowing we went out THREE times to eat— I’m feeling pretty good! Please pardon me as I do my happy dance:

For parents who live in Vancouver and surrounding area who are interested in something to do with their children, participating in the Early Developmental Research Group at UBC is fun! It is an activity that doesn’t require weekly commitment, they receive degrees and prizes, plus you’re contributing to research. At age 2, Blake already has her Post Doctoral degree and Sloane with her Bachelor of Arts at 6 months! More information can be found on their website.

We decided to keep Blake’s birthday low key this year. From all the moving due to the flood in the summer to Christmas holidays in Calgary during December, we wanted a little break. Blake had a great birthday weekend and she was showered with practical presents. Maybe next year we’ll go a little more extravagant for her birthday. Keep in mind, we still have Sloane’s 1st birthday in July to look forward to.

    The story behind the socks

I’m a SAHM (Stay-at-home-mom) and I find some days quite challenging with two kids under age 2 and a dog. Some days, it isn’t going well for me at all and some days I feel like a rockstar. Okay, so:
    * I know my shoe area is a mess
    * I’m THAT person who has a collection of socks in a pile by the front door
    * There are only so many times a day I can put shoes together nicely until I don’t give AF
    * Yes, I have small feet for an adult

My 6-month-old, Sloane is at the stage where scratching her eyes and face is a fun game so mittens are a must on her little hands. Except she’s REALLY good at this game where she pulls them off and hides them on us. When those are hidden, I turn to socks. Can you see those cute baby socks in grey with a pink bow in the photo? Those were the “mittens” we were using which were last seen on the couch. My husband swore they were on the couch and didn’t move them. I searched everywhere and couldn’t find them. I found these at the end of the night when I was about to take the dog out. It turns out Blake, my toddler took them and placed them by the shoe area because she knows socks go with shoes.

Where am I going with this? Even though I find some days extremely challenging with 2 under 2, toddler tantrums and lack of sleep (and coffee); moments like finding socks by shoes are really rewarding. It means we taught our little person something and she might actually turn out alright after all.

    SeaWheeze Half Marathon 2018 registration

Within the 5 years of living in Vancouver, one of my goals is to run the SeaWheeze Half Marathon. The SeaWheeze Half Marathon is 21.1km (13.1 miles) around the city including the seawall. This year, they set up a non-guaranteed entry draw that opened on Thursday, January 25, 2018 10:00am PT until Friday, January 26, 2018 10:00am PT for 9,500 spots in the race. An email was sent out on Friday, January 26, 2018 4:00pm PT to randomly selected participants who had until Saturday, January 27, 2018 11:59pm PT to register for the race or their spot would be given away. This means those who didn’t receive an email may still get a chance! Emails will be sent out every other day at 4:00pm PT daily until all spots are claimed (according to their Facebook page).

In previous years, they would open registration at 10:00am PT and thousands of runners and individuals who didn’t want to miss out on the craze sat in front of their computers and crashed the site, refreshing their browsers and clicking register until they got onto the registration page (or the waiting room which is where it took you before the registration page). Yup, I was one of many last year and I got in! Unfortunately (and fortunately), I got pregnant and my due date was a week before the run so I obviously didn’t run. Here’s my second chance! The run costs $173CAD and here’s what you get:

    * A finisher’s medal and gift
    * Runner’s package
    * Special edition SeaWheeze run shorts
    * Training program
    * Post-race brunch
    * Water and fueling stations with aid
    * A ticket to the SeaWheeze Sunset Festival
    * Yoga with thousands of other yogis

I know what you’re thinking, this is a super expensive race. It’s the experience that counts right? I’m excited! For those who didn’t get selected to register, you still have a chance and I wish you luck!

    The wet adventures of 2017

My last post was over a year ago and I’m a bit ashamed of myself for that. First of all, we welcomed our baby girl, Sloane on July 25, 2017! The year 2017 was definitely the craziest year and here’s a summary of what happened:

    * We spontaneously decided to renovate our bathroom and kitchen. Renovations for our bathroom started in early March and lasted 3 weeks. A few days later, the kitchen renovation started which was completed at the end of May. It was quite difficult living in our 750 sq ft, one floor condo but it looks amazing now and we were able to maximize spaces for storage.
    * Thursday, July 20, 2017 was a game changer. A burst pipe in the suite upstairs flooded the owner’s condo unit including ours and damaged the ceiling and bathroom in the suite below us. Being 38 weeks pregnant with no place to move to until Sunday night, we had to stay in our condo for the weekend with 4 dehumidifiers and fans blowing at all hours of the day and night. It was loud, 40°C hot and we had to sleep out on our patio for a couple nights, it was sweat drenching hot. We were going to be out of our home for 2-3 months or longer— packing for summer, fall, a new baby, toddler, dog, and ourselves was no easy task.
    * We moved out of our home and the next day, baby girl Sloane was born! (What timing right?)
    * From the end of July until the end of September, we moved 3 times. Long story short (will include the details in another post when I decide to write it up), a few days after moving back home, an unresolved leak showed up in the bathroom and a portion of our bathroom ceiling was ripped out to repair the leak. There was a large hole in our bathroom ceiling for over a month.
    * Two weeks after our bathroom ceiling was repaired, I walked past our kitchen when I heard a drip noise in the walls. To my horror, there was brown water coming from our outlet and soaking everything in its path on the counter. The dishwasher in the suite above had a leak and all the yummy dirty water from the dishwasher was coming out of our wall.
    * For Christmas, we went back to Calgary and Canmore where we packed/unpacked 5 times in the couple weeks we were there. We didn’t have one place to stay for the entire trip which resulted in multiple packs.

    A few things:

    * We are glad to be home
    * We highly recommend home insurance because we would’ve been so screwed if we didn’t have full coverage
    * This has helped my journey in minimalism
    * We are staying home for Christmas next year
    * No matter where we lived, we had each other and that is the most important part of everything

2017… What do they say? New Year, New Me?

Currently, there are nine posts sitting in my drafts and I haven’t completed any of them to post. It seems silly to spend so much time writing these posts for them to sit in my drafts. I haven’t written in my blog for over two months for a few reasons:

    1. Sleep. Oh how I love sleep! I’ve been so exhausted after Blake’s bedtime I crumble and jump into bed immediately after she falls asleep.
    2. Discouraged. I’ll admit it, there are all these great mom bloggers I’m comparing myself to out there. Doesn’t it seem like everyone is doing it? We all do it for our own reasons but mine is probably so boring compared to theirs zzzzzzzzzz. Why am I even comparing?
    3. Pregnant. Surprise! I’m pregnant again! You’ll only know if you read my blog! Your first trimester is the worst and I am extremely “lucky” to experience nausea throughout my whole pregnancy. You’re constantly tired, sick with nausea, exhausted, the smell of food either causes your mouth to salivate or make your stomach turn, and you’re constantly eating. Did I miss anything? Basically the last three months of my life right there.
    4. #Laptopproblems. My husband and I have been sharing his laptop for the last two years. My wonderful 2011 Apple MacBook Pro is super slow. For those who are old enough to remember the rise of the internet, picture yourself in 1998, waiting for your internet browser to load… “Mom! Don’t pick up the phone! I’m using the internet!!!” because we know the second someone picks up the phone, you’ll be disconnected from the internet and you’ll have to dial-up and try again. That’s my 2011 MacBook Pro, it’s on the “To be dealt with” list.
    5. Texting & Facebook. Must. Stop. Texting. So. Much! It seems the second we put Blake to bed, I’m in bed myself on my phone texting or browsing Facebook. Two hours later I’m still on my phone. It’s a problem and it needs to end!

I’m not going to bore anyone with New Years resolutions because I don’t really believe in making them. “Starting January 1st, I’m going to…” yeah, no, not me. I’ll have goals for the year of 2017 but that’s as good as it gets. However! I am going to Apple to get my MacBook Pro looked at this weekend and if all goes well, I will be posting more often on my blog and posting things without saving it to my drafts. How’s that for “New Year, New Me?”

    The Great Climate Race

    Morning of the Run

This morning, we completed our first 10k run/walk together at The Great Climate Race! The race was around the Stanley Park Seawall in Vancouver, BC and it was beautiful! We couldn’t have asked for a better day for this run/walk. I jogged most of the way with a few walking breaks every couple kilometres. We also stopped for a bathroom break 5k into the race. Below are some photos I snapped during our jog:

    Race results

There were a total of 608 participants (some were virtual) in the race. Our official time was 1:14:01 and chip time was 1:12:21. I had no Personal Best (PB) goals for time in the race— I only wanted to complete it and we did! For jogging with a stroller, jogging 10k with absolutely no training,  and starting second last because I had a stroller, I am extremely pleased with our results and I couldn’t care what place we got. It was all about having fun and participating. We look forward to doing it again next year!

The Great Climate Race – Vancouver, BC – October 30, 2016

Blake and I are ready for our 10k run/walk!

The Great Climate Race, a 10k or 2.5k walk or run takes place on Sunday, October 30th, 2016 in Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC. It is a 100% solar, battery and bike powered race with zero waste (bring your own water bottles because there are no cups). This is the second annual Great Climate Race created to crowdfund for renewable energy projects. How did I find out about The Great Climate Race? Groupon! I was browsing Groupon and found a deal for $30. The last time I ran any distance was the Irongirl back on August 7th and that distance was only 5k. I was hoping by signing up for this 10k run, it would motivate me to start running— which it didn’t. For those who know me well, you’ll know I like to wing it, and make things happen whether I’m ready or not. I’m not physically trained to run a 10k and I don’t suggest to others to wing it as well. Whether I walk or jog the 10k doesn’t really matter— this race is about climate change and crowdfunding for renewable energy. Currently, raised funds will go to two solar projects announced on the website: OcraLab (remote island by Alert Bay, BC) and the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (North Vancouver, BC)For more information on The Great Climate Race and what they’re all about, visit their website here.

Baby jail, baby jail, baby jail!

The baby jail! Also known as the North State Super Yard purchased from Amazon.ca.

Our baby jail— I mean, North State Super Yard Gate has arrived! My friend, Sophie has one and after I saw it, I knew we needed one for Blake. I bought our Super Yard from Amazon.ca for $120 (original price of $150 at the time of purchase on September 24, 2016). I recently looked on Amazon to see how much it’s going for today and it’s $200! Wow! I usually shop around and look at prices for a while before I purchase an item and the Super Yard has always been around $150.

Blake has been army crawling around everywhere. She’s been pulling papers from the coffee table, going after the dog’s toys and water dish… basically getting herself into places I don’t want her to be. I needed something to keep her in a safe place while I was doing little things like going to the washroom for more than three minutes, getting myself dressed, laundry, making meals, the list goes on. It’s been a challenge prepping dinner in two minute intervals— Here I am, slicing raw chicken and I have my baby army crawling turbo speed to the dog’s water dish. Judging her speed and distance, I have 10 seconds to power wash my hands with soap and run over before there is water all over the place. Place her back on her play mat and do it again two minutes later. Now do this about five more times before the cooking begins.

Initially, when I was setting up the Super Yard, I felt really bad that she wasn’t going to be able to crawl freely around our place. Once I placed her in with all her toys, that feeling went away. She loved it! She went from army crawling to sitting and playing with all her toys. She has always been able to sit unassisted for a period of time but it seemed the second I placed her into the Super Yard, she was more interested in sitting than army crawling. Also, in the time we’ve had it, she has gone from sitting to crawl position and back to sitting position. Pretty exciting mom moment. I love this baby jail already! Milestones!

    Movies for Mommies

    Sample bag
Sample bag contents we received from Movies for Mommies.

Movies for Mommies! Do I need to say more? Since Blake, we’ve gone to the movies a handful of times. What a great idea to start Movies for Mommies! This week, Bad Moms staring Mila Kunis was showing at the Dunbar Theatre in Vancouver. Movies run alternating Wednesdays at 11:30am at the Dunbar location. They also have showings at Vancity Theatre downtown on selected Wednesdays.

We got to the Dunbar Theatre around 11:15am and there was a line of 12 moms with babies ahead of us. The website says doors open at 10:30am, whereas the Facebook page says 11:00am. I’m not quite sure when the doors really opened but they didn’t start the show until everyone was in. When we walked in, we received a sample bag and ballot for a chance to win prizes. The theatre had plenty of space for strollers and it was very baby friendly! The movie sound was reduced (I brought ear muffs and didn’t need them), the lights were off (sleep, baby, sleep!), change tables, diapers, wipes, and bottle warmers were available. We overheard a person say the other week had an attendance of five moms. This week’s turn out was probably so busy because Bad Moms was playing. I mean, what mom doesn’t want to see this movie!?

    Cost

I don’t go on Groupon much but for some reason I was browsing on the website the night before and found a Groupon deal for $16— one movie, one popcorn for two people at the Dunbar Theatre. On the Movies for Mommies website, tickets cost:

    Adults $11.50 (2D) and $14.50 (3D)

    Children (3-13) $8.00 (2D) and $11 (3D)

    Babies (0-12 months) FREE

On the Movies for Mommies Facebook page, the cost says $9.75, which is how much my friend said she paid. Either way, I got a great deal off Groupon! For those ages 14+, I’m unsure on the cost but I would guess $9.75 or contact them and ask. Dads, friends, grandparents, caregivers, and others are all welcome to join!
